When was t shirts invented

In the early and mids, the T-shirt in all its iterations had yet to become popular amongst the masses in Britain. Fashion designers like Barbara Hulanicki, however, were bent on breaking the status quo and marketing the T-shirt to fashion-conscious youth.

Although the story begins, more or less, in the early 50s, it was in the 70s that the T-shirt truly emerged as something revolutionary. None of this was lost on Vivienne Westwood and her then-partner in crime Malcolm Maclaren, whose T-shirts — both in terms of graphics and tailoring — effectively encapsulated the ethos of the punk movement taking place in Britain in the late 70s.

Nor did veteran designer Katherine Hamnett fail to appreciate the subversive potential of three stitched-together pieces of cotton. It is, more than anything else, the subversive potential of the T-shirt and its power as a medium for expression that the exhibition at the London Fashion and Textile Museum examines.

A strange thing is that everything in the world has changed and evolved over the years, but the t-shirt has still detained its t-shape and its cotton raw material. We are counting on the t-shirt to stay around till the end of time! So, move beyond fashion sense, for apparel also have an evolutionary sense!

Let us look at some interesting facts about history of t shirts in its year old history. Like so many things, the t-shirt owes its origins to the armed forces. The Navy introduced this garment as an undershirt.

And like so many other things, it took movie stars to change it from mundane to popular. Marlon Brando and James Dean were the earliest proponents of t-shirts as outerwear to be flaunted proudly instead of innerwear to be hidden under other clothes, and that was a turning point in the history of t shirts.

From those early days, t-shirts began to become so popular that if all the t-shirts in the world were to be lined up end to end today, they would encircle the globe more than times. France and Qatar respectively hold the record for producing the costliest and the largest t-shirt.

Not to be outdone, Spain has breasted the tape in a different area. It was the venue for the first wet t-shirt contest for girls. As companies such as Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Jockey currently churn out millions of shirts per year, the T-shirt is a proven commodity in American culture.

It was not that long ago when American Apparel changed the mass blanks tee business to a fashion business. By taking the traditional styles—V-necks and crew necks— and changing the pattern to body conscious silhouettes, the new generations of designer knit T-shirts have taken flight.
